A pesticide is a substance utilized to kill, repel, or control organisms (plant or animal) that are pests to crops or other animals (for example mice, rats). There are different categories of pesticides, such as
Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds and are primarily components of essential oils. These compounds give aroma and flavor to all plants including hemp. These chemicals are produced by the plants to protect them from being consumed by organisms such as insects. Our lab conducts both fingerprinting (determines which terpenes are present) and profiling (determines the amounts or concentrations in which these compounds are present). Our terpenes testing uses Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify and quantify these compounds. This includes heart cutting and large volumne injection to increase the sensitivity or polarity of the column.
Chemical solvents (for example, isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, acetonitrile) are used to extract other compounds such as cannabinoids or terpenes during manufacturing processes to increase the yield and concentrate the material of interest. These solvents can be very harmful if they are consumed or inhaled. Analysis of these solvents in manufactured oils, tinctures, ingestibles, or other infused products is extremely important as products must not contain trace or residual amounts of these detrimental compounds.
